Lerwick is the port of the Shetland Islands Council and also has a commercial harbour, specialising in North Sea oil support services. The Lerwick Port Authority owns and operates two piers, three breakwaters and jetties. The town's main industries are fishing; fish processing (mainly for export); renewable energy – mainly wind turbines; aquaculture – shellfish farming (oysters) as well as salmon farming at sea; ship repair/shipbuilding yards including one owned by BAE Systems Surface Ships which builds offshore patrol vessels for the Royal Navy: construction - civil engineering projects such as bridges or tunnels, power stations etc.; tourism - especially visiting cruise ships from all over Europe during summer months: whisky distilling at Scalloway on South Mainland with its associated visitor centre 'Shetland Distillery'; light industry such as knitwear manufacturing plus some food processing plants like ice cream production etc.; education facilities include Shetland College UHI which offers higher education courses that lead to degrees through collaborations with universities elsewhere in Scotland.
