A 93 oz (2.9 kg) gold torc from the Bronze Age was found in Inverness in 1833, and is now at the British Museum. The city gave its name to a class of lace-like fabric that was made there until 1776 when cotton superseded linen as a material for fine shirts; these became known as "Inverness shirting".
