Glasgow is also known for Glasgow patter, a distinct dialect of the Scots language that is noted for being difficult to understand by those from outside the city. The University of Glasgow (abbreviated as Glas. in post-nominals) is a public research university in Glasgow, Scotland. Founded by papal bull in 1451, it is the fourth-oldest university in the English-speaking world and one of Scotland's four ancient universities. Along with Edinburgh and St Andrews, it was considered to be one of the "ancient universities" within Scotland well into modern times; its historic status was recognised alongside those institutions by an Act passed by Parliament in 1858 giving it authority to award degrees "in all faculties at any time".
