Newry's modern economy is largely based on public administration, retail and tourism. The city has a long tradition of traditional music and dance, which continue to be popular. In the early 21st century, Newry was promoted as Ireland's "digital capital" due to its rapid expansion in the electronics sector: it was reported that more than one third of Ireland’s digital technology companies were established there by 2008.The city also has an expanding tourist industry; several hotels have been built around Newry Canal Basin near Strangford Lough with views of Carlingford Lough and are marketed as being in both Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland (the border runs along this lough).
