Sunderland: History See also: Timeline of Sunderland history See also: Timeline of Sunderland history The Wearmouth Bridge was built by Bishop Pudsey between 996 and 1017 AD; it linked Monkwearmouth with what became known as Bishopwearmouth (later renamed Sunderland), on the north bank. It was probably destroyed during Danish invasions in 1001–1003 AD or shortly after when King Sweyn Forkbeard captured York following his victory over Æthelred II at the Battle of Ashingdon on 20 September 1014; however there are no records to confirm this theory.
