RAF Mildenhall is home to the 100th Air Refueling Wing (100 ARW), an Air Mobility Command-gained unit of the United States Air Force. The 100 ARW currently flies the Boeing KC-135R Stratotanker and has approximately 900 personnel assigned, including both active duty Regular Air Force and reserve component airmen. The wing provides aerial refueling support to U.S., NATO and other allied aircraft as well as special operations missions in direct support of combatant commanders worldwide using KC-135R/T tankers modified for airdrop delivery, along with C-130 Hercules transports configured for aerial refueling missions; it also maintains ground alert status at all times during which one third of its aircraft are manned, armed and ready for immediate takeoff on short notice should world events dictate their use. It was activated on 1 October 1993 but can trace its lineage and honors back over 60 years to World War II when it was known as the 100th Bombardment Group (Heavy).
