The city is also home to the Lancashire County Cricket Club, Lancaster City Football Club, and a rugby league club. The name of Lancaster originates from the Brythonic word Ladenses meaning "people on the River Lune". This name originally referred to a settlement near Warton Crag in North Lonsdale. It was later applied to Vagniacae (the inhabitants of what became known as Castle Acre) by Ptolemy in his Geography and then became associated with an area more generally known as Liteland or Englaland which stretched along both sides of the River Lune into Westmorland. By this time it had become a stronghold for Cumbric speaking people who would come together under one ruler: King Lud son of Heli whom Bede calls Bretwalda ("Bretwalda" means High King).
