Ipswich is home to the largest operational police force in England and Wales, with a resident population of around 200,000. The town has been used as a filming location for various television series such as Endeavour (2012–present) and Inspector George Gently (2007–2016). Ipswich is an ancient settlement that has existed since at least the time of the Angles. It was one of six townships built by Alfred the Great in defence against marauding Danes; Ipswich was situated north west of where medieval Ipswich now stands. A large medieval ditch running east-west through what later became St Mary's Churchyard delineates part its boundaries; it may have served as an outer defensive moat to protect from Viking raids up river along what later became Orwell Lane on which St Mary's Church stands today.
