The city is also a centre for software development, biotechnology and scientific research. Kharkiv has been ranked as the most livable city in Ukraine; the survey took into account factors such as quality of healthcare, cost of living, crime rate and level of safety. In Kharkiv there are 11 higher educational institutions including National University "KhPI", which was founded in 1805 (one year after University Kyiv-Mohyla Academy) making it one of Europe's oldest universities that is still functioning today. The first female university student in Ukraine Hrystyna Skarbek-Drohojowska was from Kharkov. The historical area surrounding Kharkiv contains many monuments to Tsar Nicholas II and other members of the Romanov family murdered at Alapayevsk later during Russian Civil War by Bolsheviks before their defeat near Moscow . There are also three memorials to commemorate this tragic event known as "the Execution by Firing Squad".
