About Khon Kaen

The city is on the Khorat Plateau, which is part of the larger Sankamphaeng Range. The city covers an area of 45.82 square kilometres (17.60 sq mi). As of 2006 it had a population of about 220,000 people.[1] Khon Kaen has been settled since prehistoric times and was important in the development of Theravada Buddhism in Isan as well as being a stronghold for Mahayana Buddhism during its early history.[2] In recent years it has become known for its production and export industry that produces products such as silk, rubber tires and agricultural goods including rice.
