The city is the leading arrival and departure point for most tourists who visit Tanzania. Dar es Salaam is also a major port, with modern container facilities at the Port of Dar es Salaam, which connects to inland areas in Tanzania through the Central Railway Line via Kigoma and Tabora. The region had a population of 4,364,541 as of 2012; it has one of Africa's largest and fastest growing economies with an annual growth rate above 6% over recent years. The Sultanate (Arabic: سلطنة‎) or Kingdom (Arabic: مملكة‎) was a Muslim state that ruled from 9th century CE to c. 1500s CE in parts of Southeastern Africa . It was founded by Yusuf bin Ahmad al-Kawneyn al-Marjaniyah around 800 CEM when he established himself on an island off Zanzibar , where he built his first palace before moving onto mainland East Africa .
