Ljubljana is the cultural, educational, economic and political centre of Slovenia. The city has a well-preserved medieval inner city with buildings that have been rebuilt in various styles during the last 600 years. It is surrounded by several green mountains and parks such as Šiška Hill ( above sea level), which offer stunning views of Ljubljanica River, Ljubljanica Bridge and its castle on Castle Hill (). In 2016 it was visited by approximately 1 million tourists per year. The oldest settlement located near today's Ljubljana was a Roman town called "Emona". The name "Emona" was first mentioned in an 814 deed to define the border between Bavaria () and Carantania (). This small settlement on the river bank soon grew into a thriving Roman city called "Aemona", that existed until at least 623 when it was destroyed by invading Slavs .
