Kranj was attested in written sources as Cruanach (and variants) in 1136 (and as Crunach in 1154, Krunnach in 1228, and Krainin(g)burch 1310). The Slovene name is derived from Slavic *Korn’ьcь; the original Romance form of the name is preserved by its German name, Kraiburg. The Latin and Greek names mean ‘belonging to the city’s castle’. In modern times, it was known for a short time also as Krànnu nùmɡ () or Krànnu džǒmɡ (), but both forms are now obsolete.
