Dakar is home to multiple national and regional banks as well as numerous international organizations. From 1978 to 2007, it was also the traditional finishing point of the Dakar Rally. The Cap-Vert peninsula was settled no later than the 15th century, by the Lebou people, an aquacultural ethnic group related to those who live on Cape Verde (the other being known in their language as "Mane"). The original villages: Ouakam, Ngor and Hann were built on sandy islands off-shore due to high tides during spring tide.[2] A fourth village called Yoffo was established in 1450[3] near what is now called Rufisque; it lay between Ngor and Hann.[4][5][6] In 1452[7], a Portuguese expedition sent by Prince Henry of Portugal reached Cape Vert [8].
