Kigali is situated in the centre of Rwanda, on a plateau at above sea level. It lies just north of the city of Gitarama and south-west from Lake Kivu. The Nyabarongo River flows through nearby Gisenyi to empty into Lake Kivu, which forms part of the border with Burundi. The Akagera River runs along Rwanda's eastern border with Tanzania; its waters feed into another lake called Rweru that also borders Burundi before flowing back eastwards to join up with other rivers in Tanzania and flow eventually into Lake Victoria near Bukoba town in Mwanza Region where it joins up again with Nyabarongo river as one river system before emptying out at Jinja town on Uganda's shoreline where it becomes Nile river that finally empties out at Mediterranean Sea after passing through Egypt, Sudan & Ethiopia (Lake Tana).
