The city is served by the Vladivostok International Airport, one of the largest airports in Russia. The name "Vladivostok" means "the ruler of the East", from Russian: Влади́восток (literal) and figuratively as "ruler" or more loosely translated as 'Lord of Eastern Lands' (vlast meaning rule). A less probable etymology is that it was named after a local Ainu leader, with an eye to its location at Nakhodka Bay on which there were once numerous Ainu settlements. In Japanese-written sources from 1874 to 1941, called Tōkyō or Tōkaidō; literally Eastern Capital), this spelling has been used for both names.
