About Moscow

Moscow has acquired a number of epithets, most referring to its size and preeminent status within the nation: The Third Rome (Третий Рим), the Whitestone One (Белово́дная), The First Throne (Первопр́стья) and the Forty Soroks.Moscow is located on both banks of the Moskva River, which flows for just over through Moscow.The city lies in a fertile plain that was originally forested; but by 1250 it had become steppe – an expanse of grassy plains with few trees or shrubs. This flatness was exacerbated after floods in 1605 carried away soil from surrounding hillsides leaving behind vast deposits of clay ideal for construction as well as agriculture.In 1703 Peter I ordered construction to begin on his new capital called Saint Petersburg near where Russia's first river, Neva River , flows into Gulf Of Finland .
