Timișoara (Romanian pronunciation: [timiˈʃo̯ara]; Hungarian: Temesvár, Serbian Cyrillic: Темишвар, German and Latinized as Temeschburg) is the capital city of Timiș County in western Romania. Located on the Bega River, it is considered one of the most important economic and cultural centres in Western Romania. The city has a population of 319,279 making it by far the largest municipality in western Romania. It was first mentioned as a medieval town named "Temeswar" or "Thyemserwer" around 1146 by an Arab geographer during Byzantine rule when its territory was part of Bulgaria under name ""Tymisvar"" ("town on river Tymis").
