Buzău is home to the football team FCM Buzău and a handball team, HCM Buzău. Buzau (Romanian pronunciation: [buˈza.o] or [buˈzu]; Hungarian: Bocsa; German: Bukarest) is a city in Romania, in the historical region of Muntenia, on the banks of the Ialomița River. It was first mentioned as an urban settlement in 1559 by Nicolae Milescu (in his work Descriptio Moldaviae), but archaeological evidence suggests that it was founded earlier than that during medieval times when it served as an important trade center for textiles and other goods from Wallachia's southern regions such as Oltenia and Dobruja which were brought overland via Bucharest along with cattle from Transylvania through Brașov to be sold at markets held here every Wednesday.
