About Alba Iulia

Alba Iulia is an important cultural center in Romania. The city has a number of historic monuments, including a fortress built by the Teutonic Knights, and an 18th-century cathedral located on top of a medieval citadel. Alba Iulia also is well known for its museums: the Brukenthal National Museum (located inside the Brukenthal Palace), housing one of Europe's most valuable collections of paintings; and The Ethnographic Museum (Muzeul Etnografic) which houses traditional Romanian costumes as well as crafts and tools from all over Romania. In 2015 it was designated "European Capital of Culture" together with another seven cities across Europe.
