It is the second most populous parish in Portugal, after São Brás de Alportel. The toponymy Quarteira comes from the Arabic word for "four", which was a reference to its four hills (Quarteiras). The name of this town has been linked with several other names: Qurtuba, Qartayra and Korteira. It may be that these names were derived from an ancient Roman settlement called Carpis or Carpidea, although there are no historical records to confirm this hypothesis.
