Quarteira (Portuguese pronunciation: [kwɐɾˈtɐjɾɐ] or [kwɐɾˈtejɾɐ]) is a Portuguese civil parish, in the municipality (concelho) of Loulé in the Algarve. The population in 2011 was 21,798, in an area of 38.16 km².

 It is the second most populous parish in Portugal, after São Brás de Alportel.
The toponymy Quarteira comes from the Arabic word for "four", which was a reference to its four hills (Quarteiras). The name of this town has been linked with several other names: Qurtuba, Qartayra and Korteira.[1] It may be that these names were derived from an ancient Roman settlement called Carpis or Carpidea,[2] although there are no historical records to confirm this hypothesis.
