The parish was founded in 1584, and its name derived from the hermitage to Saint Joseph (São José), that existed on the site of a chapel constructed by Manuel de Sousa Tavares. The construction of this chapel occurred sometime between 1612-1615, when it was consecrated under the invocation "Nossa Senhora da Conceição", but later became known as "Igreja do São José". The church is located along Rua Dr. Joaquim Jacinto Leite Pereira, near Largo das Portas do Sol (Sun Gate). It is one of few churches in Ponta Delgada that predate 1755 earthquake; although much altered over time.[2] A small fishing village until 18th century [ edit ] During most part of its history until about 1800, it remained a small fishing village with little more than 100 inhabitants.[3] By 1790 there were only two or three houses outside the walls surrounding Church and Convento dos Capuchos.
