Taguig lies on the western shore of Laguna de Bay and is bordered by Muntinlupa to the south, Parañaque to the southwest, Pasay to the west, Cainta and Taytay on its north side (all in Metro Manila), as well as Makati City and Pateros across Laguna de Bay. The city can be divided into three distinct areas: Población (the downtown area) along Bonifacio Drive which contains most of Taguig's high-rise commercial buildings; Central Business District or "Central" along C-4 Road where most offices are located; and Lower Bicutan which houses industrial factories. The name "Taguig" came from a Tagalog word meaning "to catch fish with hook". It was once written as ""Tagik"" in some Spanish documents.
