Olongapo is the location of Subic Bay, a former United States Navy base. The city has been voted as one of the top ten premier tourist destinations in the Philippines and recently, it was named by BusinessWeek magazine as one of Asia's most dynamic cities. It is also famous for being a popular destination for American military personnel stationed overseas in Clark and Subic Naval Base (now closed). Olongapo City ranked first among Philippine cities with large populations but low per capita income. History [ edit ] The name "Olongapo" came from the native word "olongap", meaning "a place where there are many fish". Olo means saltwater; Apo means water or river; hence, it was coined to be a fishing town. The early history of Olongapo dates back to pre-colonial times when people along its coastal areas were called upon by their chieftains to help settle disputes between tribes who lived inland near Manila Bay.
