It is located in the Huancayo Province, of which it is also capital. The city has a population of about 200,000 inhabitants and serves as an important commercial center for the central Andean region. Huancayo was founded on October 15th, 1540 by Alonso de Alvarado during his campaign to quell rebellions across northern Peru (1538-1541). It became one of the most important cities in southern Peru due to its strategic location along major trade routes and its proximity to silver mines at Cerro de Pasco.
