Lahore is located on the banks of the Ravi River, and is one of Pakistan's most cosmopolitan cities. The city has a rich history that dates back to antiquity. Lahore was known as "Pragjyotishpura" during the rule of Hindu Shahi kings in 6th century CE; it was also known as "Lonkapuri". After capture by Mahmud Ghaznavi in 1021, Lahore became capital (1173) and seat (1175) of what came to be known as the Delhi Sultanate. In 1241, for reasons unknown but probably connected with his conflict with Khokhars who had captured Punjab region after death or deposition from throne by Muhammad bin Sam), Prithvi Raj Chauhan moved his capital from Delhi to Kanauj then called Purushpur which he renamed 'Kanohar'(after himself).
