Dieren is situated on the river IJssel, and has a population of around 15,000. The town is located in the Achterhoek region. It lies between Zutphen (to its west) and Arnhem (to its east). Dieren was an independent municipality until 1818 when it merged with Rheden to form one municipality called "Rhederadeel". This union lasted until 2003 when Rhederadeel became part of the new municipality Bronckhorst which also includes Hengelo en Ommeren.
