About Dronten

The municipality of Dronten was established on January 1, 1984, through the merger of the municipalities Oostelijk Flevoland (Eastern Flevoland), Noordoostpolder and Wester-Koggenland. The town Dronten itself was not part of this merger; it had already been a separate municipality since 1857. Dronten is located in an area called "Flevoland", which consists mostly of reclaimed land from the Zuiderzee (now IJsselmeer). It has several lakes: Wijster Lake and Loosdrecht Lakes are to be found near its borders with Almere and Lelystad respectively; while Urk Lake is situated within its boundaries. A small river named de Drechter flows through it as well.
