The city is located at an elevation of 1,300 metres (4,300 ft) above sea level. The population in 2004 was approximately 45,000. It is the capital of Azilal Province and has a population of about 50 000 inhabitants. Azilal's name comes from the Berber word "azel" meaning "heaven". This name refers to its location on top a mountain surrounded by three rivers: Oued el Abid (the longest river in Morocco), Oued Ziz and Oum er Rbiaa which are tributaries for the Draa River.
