About Cancún

The city is one of the largest in Mexico and is a popular spring break destination for college students from the United States. The city's hotel zone has beaches, nightclubs, bars and restaurants that cater to both Mexican tourists and visiting Americans. Cancún has been home to some of Mexico's most successful resorts such as Club Mediterráneo (now closed), Hoteles Playa del Carmen (now Meliá Hotels International) and Barceló Hotels & Resorts all located along Boulevard Kukulcán Pkwy., which are now considered an extension of downtown Cancún. Cancun was founded by Mayan people in the pre-Columbian era; however, there are no records about how this civilization flourished or about its possible collapse due to natural disasters or attacks from neighboring cultures.
