The city is also the home of the football club C.D. Toluca and it is a short distance away from Cuernavaca, one of Mexico's largest cities with an important tourist industry. The city's name translates to "Hill of Tule". Toluca was founded by the Mexicas (Aztecs) in 1473 on top of a hill called Chapultepec ("atop an eagle’s nest"). This gave it great strategic value against attack from two sides: from Lake Texcoco to the north, and Tenochtitlan (Mexico City) to the south; as well as making it easier for them to control water supplies in their arid environment.
