The city is also a tourist destination in its own right due to its unique location. The city is served by the General Rodolfo Sánchez Taboada International Airport and Mexicali has one professional football team, C.D. Plaza Mexico of Liga de Ascenso MX, who currently play in the Segunda División de México (second tier). The origins of Mexicali are closely tied to agriculture and especially horticulture beginning with early indigenous cultures who settled on what was then called "Culiacan Marsh" which later became an important source of food for the Spanish missionaries during their evangelization efforts that began in 1597; this area now corresponds to present-day downtown Mexicali as well as areas along both banks of the Colorado River within Baja California state boundaries.
