According to 2009 census data from Statistics Kenya , Nairobi's gender composition was 47% male and 53% female; with 48% being under 15 years old.The vast majority of people living in Nairobi are ethnic Africans with 97 percent being native speakers of one or more Bantu languages . There are also small numbers who speak other African languages such as Nilotic Kipsigis , Maasai Oromo , Somali Turkana or Swahili However English is widely spoken among members who have received higher education both at home and abroad due to its status as an official language used for business purposes across East Africa .
