Zama is located on the alluvial plain of the Sagami River, approximately 50 kilometers south-west of Tokyo. The area has a mild climate with hot, humid summers and cool winters. The area around present day Zama was part of ancient Musashi Province. During the Kamakura period in late 12th century, it came under control by Imagawa clan who ruled Suruga Province from their base at Sunpu Castle (in what is now Shizuoka Prefecture).
