The city's main railway station, Sapporo Station, is operated by JR Hokkaido. The station is located in the central part of the city and has regular services to Hakodate (1 hour), Otaru (40 minutes) and Kitami. There are also limited express trains to Aomori via the Seikan Tunnel which takes around 3 hours; however service was suspended from December 1, 2015 until March 25, 2018 due to damage sustained during a series of earthquakes that struck Japan in 2016. Limited express trains connect Saporro with Sendai as well as Matsumoto on weekends only; these take about 5½ hours via the Seikan Tunnel or 6½ hours on non-JR lines through Akita Prefecture.
