Abidjan lies on the south-east coast of the country, on a long lagoon created by the Ébrié Lagoon to its north and by its own inner lagoons. The city was originally developed on islands separated by branches of the Ébrié Lagoon. The district of Abidjan is located in southwest Ivory Coast between Grand Bassam (to which it is connected via bridge) and Bouaké (which lies across a strait). It covers an area of .
