The name of the city is derived from that of Milan, a place where cattle used to graze. The first recorded use of the name "Milan" in these areas is dated to 879 (the Latinized formof Medieval Greek Μελίναινα). According to one theory, the origin may be traced back to a Gallic word meaning "full", as opposedto empty cities such as Lyon or Rome. There are other theories which hold that Milan's name derives from Mediolanum; however this idea has not been supported by scholars and there remains no consensus on whether or not it should be considered an etymology.
