The city is also known in Tuscany as "La Città Giardino" ("the garden city") due to its many trees, which line the streets in the old town. Lucca was founded by the Etruscans and became a Roman colony in 180 BC. The rectangular grid of its historical centre preserves the Roman street plan, and even today, some major roads follow that plan; for example Via San Pietro (St Peter's Street), Via San Giorgio (St George's Street) and Corso Don Minzoni.
