Reggio Calabria: History See also: Timeline of Reggio, Calabria and Reggio di Calabria (disambiguation)The archaeological site of the Ancient Greek city of Rhēgion Polis. The archaeological site of the Ancient Greek city of Rhēgion Polis. The area around modern Reggio was inhabited by the Messapii in early historic times, shortly after 1000 BC; according to Herodotus they were a pre-Indo-European people who lived alongside a related tribe called the Sicels on Sicily across from mainland Italy. Later, in 6th century BC as part or Magna Graecia's colonization their territory was reduced to present day southern tip and named Zancle or Messene which later became Messina (and then Siracusa). In 8th century BC along with other Greeks who had previously colonized parts but not all coastal areas such as Ionia and Aeolian Islands they founded new cities like Naxos, Catana etc.
