History [ edit ] The province of Potenza was formed in 1927 by the merger of the provinces of Matera and Melfi. It lost territory to form the new province of Barletta-Andria-Trani in 1963. In 1992, it was dissolved and its territory divided between two new provinces: Potenza and Matera. The latter is part of Basilicata region, while former is in a subregion called Lucania (Italian: Lucania). Both are included into Southern Italy or Mezzogiorno.
