About Lanciano

The town is bordered by Ateleta, Carpineto Sinello, Casalbordino, Castel Frentano and Orsogna. The municipality borders with Belmonte Piceno (AP), Crognaleto (CH), Fossacesia (CH) and Guardiagrele. History Lanciano was founded in the early Middle Ages by refugees from Aquino who had been driven out of their original homes during a war between two Lombard families: the Aleramici of Benevento and the Ipati di Capua. They settled at first near present-day Chieti on land conquered from the Saracens; later they moved to higher ground nearby that would become Lanciano's current location.[1] In 854 AD it was sacked by Muslim invaders under Abū Ja'far al-Mansur after its Christian inhabitants refused to convert to Islam.
