Cavan borders six counties: Leitrim to the west, Fermanagh and Monaghan to the north, Meath to the south-east, Longford to the south-west and Westmeath across Carrickboy River (Abhainn na Séad) in its extreme north-western corner. There are five historic baronies in the county; while baronies continue to be officially defined units they are no longer used for many administrative purposes. Their official status is illustrated by Placenames Orders made since 2003,[3] where official Irish names of parishes have been changed due or as a condition of planning permission being granted.[4] History [ edit ] The county was part of Ulster until 1801 when it was made part of Connacht (along with County Roscommon). It was split into counties Cavan and Donegal on 1 January 1922.
