It is the third largest city in West Bengal after Kolkata and Asansol. Geography [ edit ] Midnapore is located at . It has an average elevation of 23 metres (75 feet). Midnapore town lies on the banks of Kangsabati River, which flows from north to south. The river divides the town into two parts – "Upper" and "Lower". The old part of Midnapore lies on eastern side of this river, while new areas are developing rapidly on western side.[2] This area was once a vast expanse of swamps where tigers roamed freely.[3] In recent years it has been converted into fertile agricultural land through extensive irrigation by water from the Farakka Barrage over Ganges near Malda district border with Bangladesh. These days rice grown here commands premium price in India as some varieties like Amingadhi carry a Geographical Indication tag due to their unique quality.
