The name Kharagpur is derived from the word "Khar" (meaning canal) and "Agpur" (meaning a place where there are canals). The city was named so because of its geographical location. It is situated on the banks of Kangsabati River, which flows through it. Earlier, this region was known as Jorhat-Bhukti or Jorhat-Bargaon area in ancient times. In fact, some people also believe that this city got its name from Goddess Kali who used to live here in ancient time before she went to Dakshineswar temple near Kolkata . The history of Kharagpur dates back to prehistorical period when it had been covered with dense forest inhabited by different tribes like Santhals , Mundas etc., who were mainly dependent upon agriculture for their livelihood. A large number of them were engaged in hunting and fishing too besides farming activities during those days..
