The district is bounded by the Hooghly River on the north, North 24 Parganas and Howrah districts on the east, East Midnapore district (Paschim Medinipur) in south-east and Bangladesh in south. South 24 Parganas District is a leading producer of salt in India. It has three industrial areas: Baruipur, Naihati and Bantala. The only oil refinery of West Bengal is situated at Haldia which lies within this district. South 24 Parganas are one of the most economically developed districts out of 17 districts in West Bengal with Kolkata as its capital city.
