The city is additionally a passage for the Chota Char Dham (the four principal pilgrim destinations in Uttarakhand). Subsequently, Shaivites (devotees of Shiva) and Vaishavites (devotees of Vishnu) call the city Hardwar and Haridwar, respectively. Haridwar is known as "Gateway to Gods" because it provides access to four major pilgrimage sites: Badrinath Temple in Badrinath; Kedarnath Temple at Kedarnath; Gangotri Glacier and its temple at Gaumukh/Gaumukh; Yamunotri Temple atop the Yamunotri glacier near Uttarkashi. The region around Har ki Pauri has been held sacred since times immemorial by Hindus who believe that taking a dip here cleanses them of their sins. It was also believed that just by bathing here all one's wishes are fulfilled or simply come true with divine blessings from Lord Brahma himself.
