The city may have derived its name from "Mayarashtra" (Sanskrit: मयार्ष, lit. "the abode of Mayasura"), a demon in Hindu mythology. The Meerut Cantonment is one of the largest and most important military cantonments in India with the Indian Army's Western Command headquarters located here at Mughal Road, along with an infantry division and other units stationed here. The Meerut airbase is also located nearby which was used by the United States Air Force during their operations in Afghanistan and Iraq wars as a transit point for troops heading to Pakistan through Russia via the Caspian Sea or Central Asia through Kazakhstan; it has since been handed over to Indian authorities after US withdrawal from Afghanistan. It has one airport - Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (IATA: MME) which serves as a regional hub for all northern states including Delhi NCR region besides being an international gateway for Nepal & Bangladesh apart from handling domestic flights within India itself.
