The case was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on 22 September. The CBI arrested three accused, including a constable and an investigating officer, in connection with the rape and death of the victim. On 28 September 2018, it was reported that two more police officers were arrested for tampering with evidence during investigation.On 7 October 2018, another policeman who had been suspended earlier for dereliction of duty committed suicide by shooting himself at his residence in Hathras district . In India , caste-based discrimination is against constitutional guarantees of equality under Article 15(1). However there are no special laws or specific criminal provisions that prohibit caste discrimination or atrocities based on it; nor is there any official government data collected specifically to monitor such incidents.[3] According to National Crime Records Bureau statistics from 2015,[4] crimes against scheduled castes have decreased by over 25% since 2007.[5][6][7] In 2016 alone 1 person per hour died due to untouchability related issues according as per NCRB report[8].
