It is situated on the border of Nepal and is known for its temples. It has a population of 1,852,944 (2001 census). The district covers an area of 4,734 km². The district lies between 26°-10' to 27°-30' north latitudes and 83°-50' to 84°20’ east longitude. The land rises from about 60 meters above mean sea level in the south near Gonda to about 300 meters at Gorakhpur city in the north along an axis that runs through Deoria town; it falls away towards Nepal with a gradient varying from one meter per kilometer near Deoria town up to five or six meters per kilometer at Bairgania in extreme eastern part bordering Nepal.
