Barauni is the biggest city in Begusarai district and a major industrial centre. It has been an important railway junction since 1879, when the Bengal Nagpur Railway was extended to this place. The town of Barauni was founded by Rai Bahadur Jagat Narayan Singh Deo on 2 February 1765 as part of his Jagir (estate). He named it after his father's name 'Baran'. The word Baran means 'a boat' in Hindi language. This name came from the fact that earlier he had lived near a lake which looked like a boat from far away.
